Chapter 8

Cain

Driving away from her was really difficult. He tried to stop the impulsive need to turn back. The further he got, the more his chest felt tight - other males might try to take her. She was to enticing, all soft, sweet, and tiny. She made a male want to protect her from all, to be the one to keep her from harm.

Fisting his hands, he slammed one down violently on the wheel, forgetting his strength.

He groaned when he realised he had dented the wheel. A fist-size dent, evidence of his loss of control. Karen and Samiel were going to be pissed.

They worked in the garage and hated rage-related accidents. Karen said, ‘It makes it harder to fix.’ She was slim but not in a delicate way. She wasn’t a Number, she was related to Nick and in some sort of protection program. He didn’t know all the details, but his head of security was aware and had deemed her less of a risk here than if she was outside where she could be used against Nick.

Samiel from site three and directly across from Cain had often been his voice of reason. When it became too much to bear and his rage overtook him, Samiel would step in and calm him.

He was less prone to rages now his men weren’t being tortured. He glanced at the wheel. How would this look?

He ran out of excuses by the time he drove the jeep into the open garage. It had a flat roof slightly tilted to allow a breeze to filter in because it was always hot in there. The front of the single-story building was always open, the garage doors running from end to end.

Karen was bent over a car, muttering and didn’t even seem to hear him pull in. It was then he noticed she had a music player in. He would have to ask her about that; his first gift to Lila would be to give her back music.

Samiel wiping his oily slick hands on a rag, his overalls stained. He gave Cain a toothy smile that was pained at the edges.

Jumping out, he took in how Samiel was avoiding looking at Karen. If Samiel didn’t sleep with her soon, he needed to find release elsewhere. His mood gradually became sourer every time Cain saw him.

“You need to do something about that.” He tilted his head in Karen’s direction, and Samiel’s lips curled.

“She’s human.”

“And you’re the most levelheaded rational male I know, but this topic is one you always talk about and run around. When will you stop finding a reason not to?” Samiel’s head disappeared in the vehicles, and his shoulders were loose despite the tension from the question. He grinned at the merriment dancing in Samiel's eyes.

“Says the one who dented a steering wheel with his big meaty fist,” he laughed, and Cain shrugged innocently. “I heard she was back,” he said and seemed to be looking for something in Cain’s reaction, his eyes assessing and sharp.
